Student rep urges focus on belonging as clubs, late bus and assistant principal search progress

Student representative Brandon used his Nov. 12 update to press for greater attention to student belonging and to report activities meant to build connection.
Brandon said Mr. Carroll has begun regular meetings with student focus groups and peer mediators to surface barriers for newer students and to develop actionable solutions. He highlighted that students see belonging as more than symbolic efforts such as dances or murals and emphasized culture and daily practice.
He listed new and returning clubs — a student connection club, knitting club, multicultural club — and noted teachers have volunteered their time to support them. Brandon said the district has reinstated a late bus to allow students to participate in after‑school activities despite budget constraints and described an upcoming Penny Wars fundraiser being planned with student input.
Brandon also said there is one finalist for the assistant principal position and that administrators are soliciting teacher feedback and survey data before next steps. Members thanked Brandon and asked clarifying questions about conferences, extracurricular schedules and the district’s evaluation and layoff practices.
