The Burlington Community School District board voted Nov. 24 to award the bid package for the Greyhound Performing Arts Center, clearing the project to move into the construction phase.
District staff told the board that one bidder, Midwest Automatic Sprinkler, had a missing status form in bid packet 4 that was provided after bidding. A district staff member said, “That’s a waivable irregularity if the board elects to waive it,” and recommended the board accept the bid after waiving the irregularity.
An unidentified board member moved to approve the debt/package as presented; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Board members noted that some donated items would come from “Mister Seiber” as referenced in the motion and celebrated the vote.
Members discussed the overall project cost during the presentation; the transcript records an approximate total package figure near $9.1 million, but the recorded wording is garbled and the board did not read a single clear, final total on the record. After approval, board members and attendees expressed excitement for the benefits to the district’s performing arts programs and said construction is expected to take roughly 16–17 months.
Next steps spelled out at the meeting included waiving the identified irregularity and moving forward with contract execution; staff indicated required paperwork had been received post-bid. The board did not record a detailed funding breakdown on the public record during the discussion.
The Greyhound Performing Arts Center has been part of district planning and the board’s vote authorizes staff to proceed with the awarded contracts and the construction schedule discussed at the meeting.
