City staff presented a site plan Monday to add ADA-compliant parking and an access ramp between two ballfields at Rotary Park, a change intended to make fields easier to reach for people using walkers, wheelchairs and strollers.
Superintendent Reynolds explained the plan: three existing parking spaces will be reconfigured so the center stall is hatched for an ADA ramp and the two adjacent stalls will be marked as accessible. "The center one will be hatched out actually for the ADA ramp... basically that'll become 2 new, ADA parking stalls with the hatched out portion in the center," Reynolds said, describing required turnaround and radius clearances.
Reynolds said the sidewalk access to the fields already "is real close to our ADA requirements" and that the project will bring the site fully into compliance. Staff said they are coordinating with engineering and public works and expect to start locates and striping within the next week or so, with construction scheduled at the beginning of the new year.
A public commenter who identified themselves as a senior softball participant thanked staff and described a recent incident where a player undergoing cancer treatment had difficulty stepping up from the parking area; the commenter said the change would be appreciated by older players and snowbirds. Reynolds confirmed the design will include at least one van-accessible stall and that staff will work with public works to meet all ADA posting and signage requirements.
No formal action was required at the meeting for this specific capital project; staff said the work will be part of near-term operations and will be presented for any required procurement or council approvals as needed.
