Parents, students urge Leander ISD to spare Steiner Ranch Elementary from cuts or closure

Steiner Ranch Elementary parents, students and community members urged the Leander ISD Board of Trustees on Tuesday to remove the campus from any consolidation or staffing-reduction plans, saying the school’s recent renovations, academic rating and walkable location make it a key recruiting asset.
"You can't take away the people who make our school strong and then expect families to pick us," said Cece, a fourth-grader at Steiner Ranch Elementary, during the meeting's citizen comment period. "That's like taking the wheels off a bike and telling us to ride faster."
A string of speakers said proposed staffing thresholds — which administrators described as triggering reduced positions when a campus falls below 500 students and possible consolidation review below 400 students — would force Steiner Ranch to lose half of roles that parents called essential, including assistant principals, counselors and librarians. Several parents and residents warned that shrinking supports would accelerate student loss to neighboring districts with open enrollment or to charter and private schools.
Administrators repeatedly told trustees the district has not made any final decisions and stressed the thresholds are intended as a tool tied to staffing guidelines and mitigation strategies. Jeremy, an administration presenter, said the thresholds are designed to pair staffing models with targeted mitigation including open enrollment, enhanced transfers and community outreach.
Parents countered that implementing staffing reductions at a successful campus would undercut the very features that attract families. "SRE is an A rated, recently renovated and walkable. It's the kind of school families want if you let it be," one parent said.
Trustees and administrators acknowledged the tension between fiscal constraints and community concerns. The board set follow-up work for December, when it will consider approving two enrollment thresholds and review a set of consolidation scenarios already developed by staff. If trustees direct it, administration said it could present final consolidation recommendations at a special meeting slated for Dec. 17.
The public comment period concluded before the board moved into other agenda items, and board leaders said they would post detailed materials for forthcoming meetings so that parents and the public could weigh in before any final actions.
