SAN ANGELO ISD board hears bond construction progress; Crockett, Glenn and Central move forward

SAN ANGELO, Texas — San Angelo Independent School District trustees received a detailed construction update tied to the district’s 2025 bond, with project managers saying core schedules remain on track and design work shifting from schematic layouts toward materials and energy analysis.
RJ Lopez of Park Hill told the board that Crockett Elementary is on schedule for an August completion; "they've completed the concrete slab currently" and steel framing is scheduled by month-end, with vertical construction visible by January 1. McGill is set to be bid this month and proceed to construction, Lopez said. "We're still moving towards these same deadlines," he said.
Lopez outlined progress on Glenn New Middle School, reporting near-completion of schematic design and ongoing refinement of site plans and floor plans. He said the team reworked the field location to reduce expensive cut-and-fill and unknown subsurface rock, noting that moving the field closer to the new building "puts it at an elevation that's a little bit more in between" and reduces grading and cost risk.
Central High School is farther along in schematic design, Lopez said, with plans that overlay new auditorium, gymnasium and cafeteria spaces and a renovation of the existing cafeteria into health-science and culinary labs. He flagged one coordination item: a main city water line currently crosses the campus and the district is "working with the city... on relocating that main water line" to avoid future bond conflicts.
Lopez described steps now moving into design development — finishes, glass placement informed by solar studies and energy analysis, and more refined imagery — and said the district has engaged contractors (including Lee Lewis for Lakeview) to begin detailed schedules for each project.
Board members asked explicit questions about reuse of existing buildings at Glenn, the presence of large boulders and site grading. Lopez said the band hall might be repurposed for athletic storage and that some older buildings were costly to keep because of grading constraints. "It was getting very expensive, and there was a lot of unknowns with having to go down underneath the existing building as far as rock goes," he said.
What's next: design development will continue over coming months with more refined material selections and cost details returned to the board; contractors and third-party oversight (mentioned in other agenda items) will be used during construction phases.
