Board rules on six student expulsion appeals; two students assigned to interim program

The Berkeley County Board of Education heard motions and took public votes on six student expulsion appeals on Dec. 15, following an executive session in which the cases were discussed.

For student #1 the board granted the appeal and assigned the student to the Next Steps Learning Center (motion by Miss Bradley; motion recorded in the transcript with a non‑unanimous tally reported in the public roll call). Student #2’s appeal was denied (motion by Mr. McQuillan; recorded as unanimous in the transcript). Student #3’s appeal was denied (motion by Mr. McQuillan; recorded as unanimous). Student #4’s appeal was denied (motion by Mr. McQuillan; vote recorded 8–1). For student #5 the board voted to return the student to the home school on strict probation (motion by Mr. McQuillan, second by Miss Littleton; vote recorded 8–1). For student #6 the board granted the appeal and assigned the student to the Next Steps Learning Center (motion by Miss Littleton; vote recorded as unanimous in the transcript).

Chair Wofford stated that no action had been taken during the executive session itself and that all disposition decisions were made in public session. The motions referenced placement options such as "Next Steps Learning Center" and strict probation conditions when applicable.
