Kingman City commissioners approved a motion to temporarily relocate the 12-foot "Running Hare" sculpture from its current private-lot site on Andy Devine to a nearby downtown site (referred to in the discussion as Location C) and directed staff to obtain bids for permanent mounting, lighting and related site work.
Mr. Noble, the staff presenter, described the sculpture as an approximately 12-foot Route 66-themed piece created by the artist (installation originally circa 2015) using recycled steel sourced locally. He said the current location interferes with ADA parking and that the property owner of the present lot has agreed to allow relocation somewhere nearby. An initial engineering/design quote for site work was reported at about $1,500; Noble said footer, sidewalk cutting or raised platform costs will vary by final location and scope.
Commissioners focused on pedestrian safety, visibility and the potential need for a crosswalk if the piece were placed on the south side of Andy Devine. After discussing four candidate sites, commissioners favored Location C (a city-owned parking-area block adjacent to the post office/third street) as a temporary site so the piece remains near downtown while staff pursues bids and further planning. The motion to move the sculpture to Location C temporarily and to study costs for permanent mounting and lighting passed by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will obtain bids for engineering/footings, evaluate lighting (including solar options), and return with cost comparisons and recommendations to the commission.
