Tree Commission seeks public input and readies grant survey; plans public session

Dwight Weese of the Tree Commission updated council on Oct. 15 that the commission has engaged a certified arborist/consultant to conduct and digitize a 100% tree survey required by a state grant. The consultant work will allow the commission to identify hazardous trees and prepare bids for tree plantings along Perry Street and elsewhere.
Weese said the commission is awaiting state approval for a grant restructuring and expects the next round of funding to be announced early next year, with awards in the May–June window and project starts in mid‑2025. The commission requested the city's assistance in convening a brief public session (proposed Nov. 19) before a council meeting to solicit resident input on tree species, locations and priorities for future grant applications.
Council members and staff discussed logistical details for posting the meeting and using the city sign to advertise the input session. The commission emphasized the opportunity for 100% funded tree plantings, subject to state criteria.
What’s next: Staff will coordinate promotion and timing for a public input session and proceed with the arborist's survey pending state approval of the grant restructure.
