At the Oct. 15 meeting the council reviewed a cluster of public‑safety measures recommended by the safety committee and staff.
Committee members recapped recent meetings that addressed alley safety, business‑hour restrictions and parking‑lane conflicts along Hamilton Avenue. As a temporary mitigation, staff proposed placing perpendicular ballards/cones and planters at select Hamilton Avenue parking lanes while more permanent streetscape work funded by a NatureWorks/CDBG grant is planned.
Council also discussed expanding the city’s fleet of Flock cameras (license‑plate readers) to assist police with locating vehicles involved in crimes. Safety committee members said use of the readers would be an additional tool for the police department.
On traffic calming, the city expects three temporary, screw‑down speed humps to arrive Nov. 1 so staff can trial them; the council discussed where to place them (e.g., Adams and Compton) and emphasized that staff would monitor effectiveness and maintenance issues before considering permanent installations.
Finally, the safety committee raised hiring a police officer assigned primarily to traffic control and accident response. Council agreed to monitor data from stealth and visible speed meters being moved around town to assess driver behavior before making long‑term staffing or infrastructure decisions.
