Survey finds middle‑school students report lower sense of belonging; superintendent proposes task force

Superintendent Dr. Eldridge told trustees that a districtwide Panorama survey administered last month showed middle‑school students (grades 6–8) reported the lowest sense of belonging among grade bands. She said the data were surprising and warranted a targeted study.
"I'm gonna create a task force to dive deep into that data and say, what do we need to ask? What do we need to collect? And what do we need to implement?" Dr. Eldridge said, adding that the task force would likely include teachers, administrators, counselors and students and would return with refined questions and implementation recommendations in time for the next survey cycle.
Trustees asked for disaggregated analysis — which student groups reported lower belonging, whether the same students reported low achievement, and how the district might correlate belonging with attendance and grades. Dr. Eldridge said the task force will refine the measurement and that results are expected to inform the May 2026 monitoring cycle and potentially the 2026–27 budget.
Next steps: administration will convene the task force, develop more specific survey items tied to observable indicators of belonging, and report back with baseline findings and recommended interventions by the spring monitoring deadline.
