Council hears updates on effigy mound interpretive panel, transportation communications and new raised crosswalk

During committee updates at the Sept. 2 meeting, Alder Myers briefed the council on multiple neighborhood and infrastructure items.

Myers said the Landmarks Commission discussed the effigy mound on Mound Drive — described to the council as fox- or wolf-shaped — and that the steward from the Wisconsin Archaeological Society is ready to move forward with an interpretive panel tentatively scheduled for next May. "We received an update from the steward of that mound for the Wisconsin Archaeological Society, who let us know that he was ready to move forward with an interpretive panel next year," Myers said.

Councilmembers noted an upcoming joint meeting between the Pedestrian, Bike and Transit Committee and another committee likely to occur this month to discuss multimodal transportation. Members emphasized the need to improve city communications about public-works projects so that residents in Middleton and neighboring communities receive timely updates, particularly for major thoroughfares such as Century Avenue.

On a safety item from Public Works, Myers reported that a raised crosswalk has been installed at Franklin Avenue and Branch Street near Sauk Trail — a decision taken to increase visibility for elementary-school students who cross there during drop-off and pick-up times — and invited public feedback on the change.

Council members also announced regional and community events, including an upcoming Dane County Cities and Villages Association meeting Sept. 10 in Windsor featuring speakers from the Clean Lakes Alliance and a public tour of Windsor’s new municipal building.
