Oceanside council ratifies emergency declaration to pursue dredging of harbor channel

Coastal zone administrator Jamie Timberlake told the Oceanside City Council on Nov. 19 that an Army Corps of Engineers survey conducted Oct. 29 shows shoaling in the Oceanside Harbor navigation channel and that only emergency dredging will restore safe navigation. "Only dredging of the channel will move sediment out of it and make the harbor more navigable," Timberlake said, noting some survey points are now about 10 feet deep and that the Corps could close similar harbors when channel mouths reach about 6 feet.
