Residents ask county for historic marker and cemetery signage; public commenters raise decorum concerns

Lila Williams, a volunteer at the county historic museum, asked commissioners to approve a historical marker at the Springville Community Center and requested county signs for small local cemeteries (she named Suwannee Valley Cemetery and Saint Matthew Cemetery), saying many sites lack names or clear access. Staff (Mr. Kirby and county administration) told her they would confirm whether plots are privately or publicly owned and would develop an action plan under county statute; Mr. Kirby noted he had made notes for follow-up and staff would contact Ms. Williams.

During public comment, a speaker identified as Speaker 17 criticized county attorney Joel Foreman and the board, alleging viewpoint discrimination and violations of the Sunshine Law and urging better enforcement of decorum rules. The speaker said prior remarks (referencing a "riffraff" comment directed at a constituent) had not been addressed by the board. The chair acknowledged the comment and moved on to other public comments.

Another public commenter, Shawn Holmgren, asked the board to consider a lease allowing the Columbia County Makerspace to use a rear garage space in the building being rehabiitted for CareerSource for workforce development; Mr. Holmgren requested the county attorney draft a lease framework. The chair agreed to consult staff and the county attorney and report back.

Next steps: staff will follow up with Ms. Williams about cemetery signage and with Mr. Holmgren about a possible lease; county attorney and staff will also address decorum and procedural concerns raised during public comment and ensure posted decorum rules are observed.
