Colfax County reports $90,000 lien collections and discusses dumpster-site cameras

Solid-waste staff told the commission the county’s recent final lien notices generated collections and payment plans that reduced the lien balance from $365,000 across 167 customers to $275,000 after 36 customers paid and 125 customers entered payment plans.
The solid-waste update also reported temporary signs and relocated roll-off containers during holidays and named three covered roll-offs placed for the period that will be removed on Jan. 9. Staff said they will work with the county attorney to follow up on accounts that remain noncompliant after outreach.
Commissioners asked whether new cameras planned for some dumpster sites could be protected from theft and whether cameras come with GPS trackers or tamper deterrents. The sheriff’s office and road department were asked to advise on theft prevention and monitoring options. County staff said some issues will require legal review and coordination with the sheriff.
Separately, commissioners discussed the timing and consequences of placing liens on properties, with staff explaining that liens cloud title and banks often require resolution prior to closing; staff said foreclosure would be a later enforcement step reserved for persistent nonpayment.
The commission agreed to proceed with outreach and the next steps for lien processing while evaluating site security options for cameras and hardware protection.
