Annandale plans to revive robotics with VEX after coach resignation; board to confirm donor intent for fund use

Jared updated the board on the Annandale robotics program, which lost its head coach over the summer and struggled to reconstitute teams. He said only two students initially remained interested and some students joined a neighboring community program. The district evaluated options including a co‑op with Maple Lake but proposed keeping the program in‑house using the VEX platform.

Jared described VEX as a more entry‑level, student‑centered and cost‑effective model than FIRST. He said VEX kits cost about $1,800–$2,000, team registration runs roughly $200 and individual competitions typically cost between $100 and $200, with most events local and no need for overnight travel. Jared said the plan is to begin recruiting in spring and to launch a sustainable program next fall because VEX registration and kit availability make it difficult to start immediately.

Board members expressed support for continuing a robotics offering. Rick cautioned the board about donor restrictions tied to previous Cardinals Rising fundraising, saying "we can only use the money for what it was intended" and that the district needs to contact donors to confirm whether they will support a switch to VEX; if donors do not consent, the district can offer refunds.

Chad Dukowitz, a CTE teacher, has experience with VEX and is assisting with planning and outreach to younger grades to build a pipeline for sustained participation. The board asked staff to follow up with donors and begin recruitment and planning ahead of a fall start.
