Adam Taming, community development director, explained the committee's role: the committee meets once to review applications, typically in February or March, and recommends allocations from the city's annual CDBG social services pot. "On a typical year, we have about $45,000 worth of grant funding that can be allocated," Taming said, and noted awards in recent years have ranged between $5,000 and $20,000 per group.
Taming said applicants have included Family Assistance Ministries and Boys & Girls Clubs and that the committee is staffed by one council member, the community development analyst, and representatives from commission/committee seats previously filled by a now-disbanded human affairs committee. The commission motioned, seconded and voted to confirm Commissioner Schmidt as the commission's appointee; the motion carried unanimously.
Next steps: Commissioner Schmidt will serve on the one-meeting panel to review and recommend allocations when the Notice of Funding Opportunity is issued, and staff will notify applicants and the committee of the meeting date.
