County seeks opioid funds for community awareness campaign, renews community health worker grant

Codington County commissioners on Dec. 2 authorized the Community Services office to apply for up to $50,000 in state opioid funds for a community awareness campaign aimed at youth and substance‑use prevention. County staff said the opioid task force and community awareness group identified the campaign as a priority to shift norms and expand support for people at risk of opioid use.
Separately, the board approved renewing the county’s community health worker (CHW) grant for $40,000 using state opioid‑designated funds. Staff said the state reimbursement per CHW will increase next year from $15,000 to $20,000, and the grant reimburses CHW services for clients not eligible for Medicaid who are at risk of opioid misuse or have substance use disorder.
Commissioners approved both actions by voice vote. County staff noted the funding is state‑allocated opioid money and not general county revenue. The CHW grant will begin in June (per staff) and requires an application deadline to be met; Community Services will manage the proposed awareness campaign if the application is successful.
