Huntsville ISD staff presented a draft 2026–27 instructional calendar at the board’s November meeting and described several adjustments intended to support new instructional materials and statutory requirements.
Mr. Forney told trustees the district must meet state constraints — at least 187 teacher work days and 75,600 instructional minutes — and that the draft adds professional learning days to accommodate Bluebonnet curriculum training. "We are required to have at least a 187 teacher work days," Forney said while outlining nonnegotiable state parameters; he also emphasized the district is proposing a single calendar this year and intends additional professional learning days so teachers can be trained on the new curriculum.
Forney noted changes such as moving new teacher in-service dates and adding two professional development days in summer and January. He said the district is designating an October date for parent-teacher conferences to meet the two-day in-person requirement in Senate Bill 12, and explained the district will count existing meet-the-teacher and open-house events as one of the required face-to-face meetings.
Trustees asked clarifying questions about whether the scheduled parent-teacher conference day was the only designated SB12 event; Forney confirmed the district will count meet-the-teacher and open house as one of the two required days and that the calendar is a draft that will be returned to the board for final approval in February.
The board did not take action on the calendar at the meeting; staff requested feedback and noted there is time to refine the draft before the February vote.
