Granite County hears extended public comment on airport beacon as board prepares Jan. 7 decision

Jack Foster, speaking during public comment, said many in the community remain unclear about the scope of the upcoming Jan. 7 agenda item and asked whether commissioners would vote to make the airport daytime-only while keeping the beacon available “for daytime and nighttime emergencies.” He also pressed whether the beacon could be radio-controlled so it would operate only when a pilot files a flight plan.
County officials said they are still compiling answers. A staff member said the commission is reviewing the Beacon Grant application and related materials kept on file in the clerk and recorder’s office, and that research into what the county can lawfully require or change is ongoing. The board said it expects research to be completed in time for the Jan. 7 meeting and that the commission will make a motion and open the item to public comment that day.
Several speakers said they wanted the airport advisory board’s Zoom meetings recorded and made available because they believe minutes and the advisory board’s stated plans differ from what is discussed in the public forums. Commissioners reiterated that the advisory board is an advisory body and that final decisions rest with the county commission, and said they would consult the county attorney about whether advisory-board meetings must be recorded.
The debate also touched on past engineering studies and a multi-year “KLJ” plan that some attendees said had been circulated to residents; commissioners said they had reviewed those plans and that the plan’s full expansion elements were unlikely to proceed as originally described.
No formal action on the beacon was taken on Dec. 23. The board scheduled consideration of the beacon application for its Jan. 7 meeting, where commissioners said they expect to vote after public comment and following staff research.
