Woodfin council approves one‑year lease extension for Friends Montessori at town property

The Woodfin Town Council voted Dec. 16 to direct town staff to execute a revision to the town’s lease with Friends Montessori School for the property at 23 Community Road, extending the lease term by one year to expire June 30, 2028, and adjusting the rent schedule.
Cara Beth Breckens, director of Friends Montessori, told the council the school has purchased 6.5 acres in Lester and hopes to close on the new site in February; the extension would provide continuity while the school develops the new property. Breckens said the school contributes to the local economy and maintains the town building in good condition.
Councilmember Urban moved to direct the town manager and town attorney to execute the lease revision that would (1) extend the lease by one year to 06/30/2028 and (2) change rent; the motion originally proposed rent changes from $1,800 to $1,900 but was revised after Breckens and a council member noted the school was currently paying $2,000. Urban amended the motion to set rent at $2,100 per month beginning July 1, 2027; the amendment was accepted and the motion carried by voice vote.
Town staff noted procedural requirements for longer leases: leases longer than 10 years would trigger upset‑bid rules treated like a sale, but council action to extend by one year did not require upset‑bid procedures. The council approved the direction to staff and asked the town manager and town attorney to finalize the lease revision.
