Council, community members honor outgoing Councilmember Rick Ryan

Councilmembers, staff and residents on Tuesday honored outgoing Councilmember Rick Ryan for his service to Mountlake Terrace since 2008.

Mayor presented Ryan with a recognition plaque “in recognition of your dedicated service, unwavering commitment, and steadfast devotion to the city of Mountlake Terrace,” noting his volunteer leadership with the city’s art show and earlier service on parks and arts committees. The mayor said, “Rick, I’ve enjoyed working with you for the past 17 years,” and credited Ryan and his family with expanding the city’s art show to regional prominence.

Ryan responded with a short farewell, thanking staff, the mayor and his family. He recalled moving council meetings when the old city hall ceiling collapsed and the city’s subsequent work to secure a permanent meeting location and funding. He also thanked Recreation Director Jeff Betts and joked about keeping Thursday nights open while on council.

Colleagues offered personal remarks in new business and liaison reports, describing Ryan as a mentor who helped new councilmembers learn meeting procedures and who added humor and steadiness to the dais. Several councilmembers noted Ryan’s long-term community involvement and encouraged him to stay engaged in volunteer roles.

The council concluded the tributes and closed the meeting; refreshments were provided afterward.
