Vivian Demko was elected president of the Saucon Valley School District board during the annual reorganization meeting, held under the Public School Code of 1949 that requires districts to appoint officers for the coming year. The vote followed nominations and brief remarks from candidates and members.
The reorganization began after the Pledge of Allegiance and roll call. Solicitor Mister Fitzgerald reminded the board that the statute requires appointment of a president and vice president at the December reorganization session. With no public comments on the reorganization, Jay Santos nominated Demko as temporary president; the board approved her appointment by voice vote, and she then presided over nominations for permanent officers.
Don(ald) Carpenter and Demko were nominated for president and addressed the board on leadership priorities, including building consensus and prioritizing students. The board conducted a roll-call vote and recorded support for Demko; the secretary announced the result and members congratulated the new president. Members then nominated candidates for vice president; after discussion and roll-call voting, Megan Lomengino was confirmed as vice president.
Board members also approved several committee and external-representative assignments. Incumbents and nominees volunteered to continue or take new seats representing the district on bodies such as the Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical authority and as PSBA legislative representatives. The board approved the time and place for regular meetings (generally the second and fourth Tuesdays), and authorized temporary use of a signature stamp until a permanent replacement arrives.
Votes and motions taken at this portion of the meeting were recorded in the board minutes. The board president and administrative staff said they will announce committee chairs and finalize committee assignments at a subsequent meeting.
The meeting then moved to the superintendent’s report and instructional and safety presentations.
