Rob Elliott was elected chair of the Buncombe County Board of Education at the board’s organizational meeting on Dec. 11 after a nomination and a voice vote.
Board members opened nominations for the chair position and Rob Elliott accepted the nomination. The board voted by voice; the chair announced “the ayes have it” and congratulated Elliott. Later, nominations for vice chair produced two nominees, Amy Churchill and Kim Plemons. Both accepted and the board voted in the order of nominations; the chair announced that Plemons had won a majority vote and congratulated her on becoming vice chair.
After the elections, Elliott took the gavel, called for—and secured—approval of the meeting agenda by voice vote, and moved the board into presentations and the regular action agenda for the evening.
The newly elected leadership will preside over upcoming planning and budget discussions, including the district’s school-improvement work and the 2026–27 academic calendar that the board considered later in the meeting.
