The City Council authorized staff to move forward with a tentative purchase agreement for a recreational facility at 6121st Street, a 20,856‑square‑foot building on just under four acres that the city has been tracking. City staff reported the assessed value is about $4.46 million, the asking price had been $3.7 million, and the parties reached a tentative agreement at $3.2 million.
City Manager David said staff foresee immediate needs to ready the building for expanded Parks & Recreation programming: a new floor (estimated at about $250,000) and additional parking for tournaments (roughly $350,000), bringing near‑term renovation estimates to about $600,000. Staff will complete standard due diligence—appraisal, inspections and utility assessments—before closing, which is anticipated prior to March 1.
David told the council the facility is already used by city programming at a limited level and that city ownership would allow a much larger and more varied recreation program set; that ownership will reduce long‑term costs compared with building new construction. Council discussed potential tax‑roll impacts and how the acquisition might alter the CIP rec‑hub project, with staff saying the rec hub cost would be reduced if the purchase proceeds.
The council approved the motion to proceed with the purchase agreement (motion passed). Staff said they will return with due‑diligence results and financing details for final approval.
