Planning Commission backs data center ordinance but urges separate rules for power generation

The Saint Mary's Planning Commission reviewed the proposed data center ordinance and generally endorsed it but recommended the council consider a separate zoning ordinance addressing independent power-generation facilities, Planning Commission representatives told the council on Dec. 15.
A Planning Commission member said the commission agreed with most of the proposed ordinance but suggested separate, explicit standards for on-site power-generation (generators and engine-driven plants) because the current "uses not provided for" category is too vague to control decibel levels, aesthetics and other community impacts. Council members and staff agreed the separate ordinance is prudent given potential state rule changes and the technical complexity of siting power-generation equipment; staff said they can draft a separate ordinance for February or March and will coordinate with the new council next year.
No formal vote on the ordinance occurred at the Dec. 15 meeting; the planning discussion was recorded as guidance to staff to prepare the separate zoning language.
