Norwood outlines redistricting changes ahead of January kindergarten registration

Superintendent Dr. Luff updated the School Committee on redistricting steps tied to upcoming school assignments and staffing changes. He said voluntary transfers were arranged so each elementary school will have qualified kindergarten teachers and that the Willett School will operate as a K–4 building next year.

"As of November 15, we have notified all of next year's grade 1 through 4 families of their child assignment for next year," Dr. Luff said. He described a licensure-driven process that limited the number of general education teachers who could be retained at Willett because of certification constraints and said principals are contacting families who requested to remain at their current schools to consider extenuating circumstances under district policy.

Dr. Luff told the committee there are no additional budgeted positions required for the redistricting of the six elementary schools and that paraprofessional transfers will begin in January (he apologized to paraprofessionals for the delay). He said kindergarten registration will begin in January and that final enrollment numbers after registration will inform any additional adjustments.

The superintendent said the district held a family meeting in November to explain the process and answer questions; attendance was roughly 26–30 people. He said he will report back after the January registration period to update the committee.

This item required no formal vote on Dec. 17; the committee received the update and asked follow-up questions about registration timing and notification processes.
