The North Providence School Committee voted Wednesday to approve an updated memorandum of understanding (MOU) governing the district’s Multi‑Tiered System of Support (MTSS), a framework the district said will standardize academic and behavioral interventions across buildings.
Superintendent Gojo introduced the request and asked Van Avery to summarize the work. Van Avery said the district is in its second year working with the state Department of Education and a research partner, AIR, to complete a needs assessment and set district‑ and school‑level goals. "We have MTSS coordinators now in every 1 of our buildings. Our high school has 2...Hopefully, by the end of this year, we'll have a new MTSS manual that will be district wide," Van Avery said.
The committee moved and seconded approval; members voted ‘Aye’ and the motion carried.
The MOU formalizes the district’s work on Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions and establishes a districtwide implementation plan. School leaders said the MOU is an administrative step to align staffing, training and materials; it does not change individual student rights or special education statutory processes.
Next steps: staff will complete a district MTSS manual and continue implementation through building coordinators.
