Oak Grove Middle School shifts to department MTSS, creates Tier 2 class

Oak Grove Middle School’s principal presented the building’s academic focus and changes under a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
The principal said the school replaced grade-level planning with department planning so teachers can meet weekly by subject to align instruction and assessments. Staff introduced common assessments to improve comparability across grade levels. For Tier 2 intervention the school created an 'academic strategies' class that uses i-Ready and other data to identify students roughly two or more grade levels behind; the class is scheduled during the school day so students who need it are guaranteed time rather than relying on after-school help. The principal said the school is developing a parallel Tier 2 math intervention in future work.
For Tier 3 the school convenes a weekly team that includes counselors and a social worker; the team follows a four-week referral process and checks progress at weeks two and three. The principal also moved PRIDE to the start of the day to include routine goal-setting, grade checks and short targeted interventions.
Board members asked about placement criteria; the principal said initial placement used i-Ready data and that teacher input and common-assessment data will be used going forward. The district framed the changes as intended to strengthen instruction, data tracking and early intervention.
