The Kerr County Airport Board asked the commissioners court Dec. 8 to approve a 4‑year lease purchase for a tractor and batwing shredder to bring mowing and shredding in‑house and reduce annual contractor costs (budgeted at ~$40,000/year).
The airport representative (Kirk) told the court the airport board used Sourcewell vendor pricing and projected about a 3½‑year payback, with equipment life expected to be "over 20 years" for the intended mowing use. He said the airport carries $40,000 per year in budget for mowing and that a lease‑purchase with a $1 buyout at 48 months was preferred to continue operations.
The county attorney advised that additional steps are required before the county can legally obligate debt or take on the lease: an interlocal agreement, county and city approvals for borrowing (because the airport is a joint venture) and review of the proposed contract. The attorney also recommended a budget amendment be prepared and reviewed.
The county judge and commissioners asked the airport board to return with the lease contract and a budget amendment for the next court meeting; no purchase or lease was authorized at this meeting. Airport staff said they will appear with the required documents and seek the court and city council approvals in coordination.
