Jennings County commissioners on Monday signed an order to reprecinct parts of North Vernon after the city recently adjusted its council districts, county election staff said.
Brenda from the election office told commissioners the city's redistricting triggered a requirement from the state Election Division to redraw precinct boundaries so local maps align with state census maps. The change consolidates several small precincts — listed in the order as 2A/2B, 3A/3B and 4A/4B — into three precincts to be called North Vernon 2, North Vernon 3 and North Vernon 4.
Election staff said consolidating precincts reduces the number of ballots to print and lowers the number of poll workers needed. Speaker S5 told the commissioners that Indiana code requires a precinct to have at least 600 voters and presented precinct headcounts showing some sub-precincts fell below that threshold, which prompted the consolidation.
County staff said most voters will not need to change polling locations because the combined precincts already used the same polling places in several cases. The election office will submit the signed order to the state; once the state approves, a newspaper notice will be published for any impacted voters, election staff said.
Commissioners moved to sign the order; the motion carried unanimously. Staff and commissioners emphasized that voters with concerns should be directed to the state election authorities for formal complaints.
