Michigan City BZA approves 2026 meeting dates, removes public application due dates

The Michigan City Board of Zoning Appeals approved its 2026 meeting calendar on Dec. 9 after amending the draft to remove publicly posted application packet due dates.
Brian Gross moved to delete the application due dates from the public calendar and later joined other members in a motion that approved the meeting dates without those due dates. Board members said the enforcement officer and planning staff need roughly a month to review packets and that publishing a strict 14-day public deadline could mislead petitioners if packets were incomplete. One member said internal guidance could be published for staff while keeping only meeting dates on public materials.
At the start of the meeting the board also approved the minutes of the Sept. 9, 2025 meeting by roll call vote. Planning staff introduced two new hires, Everett Ebling (premise specialist) and Lucas Lopez (associate planner). The public-comment period recorded no participants on Zoom and no substantive public testimony. The board adjourned following closing motions.
Motions and roll-call votes recorded in the meeting minutes show the minutes and the 2026 meeting dates were approved unanimously by those present.
