Trustees hear school improvement plans; Gus Franklin honored as 2025 Blue Ribbon School

Principals from three Adelanto Elementary School District sites presented their school plans for student achievement during the Oct. 28 board meeting, outlining data trends, priority strategies and next‑year goals.
Columbia Middle School Principal Carrie Cozart told the board her site saw CAASPP declines tied to staffing and infrastructure instability but detailed a multi‑year recovery plan. Cozart said the school is now showing “a clear upward trend” in CAASPP scores and described coaching, consulting and the PDSA improvement cycle as central to the turnaround: “We are leveling up.”
Donald F. Braddock Elementary Principal Christina Valenzuela said Braddock serves about 381 students, with approximately 70% Hispanic (about 269 students), 14% African American (about 56 students) and roughly 10.5% identifying as multiethnic (about 40 students). Valenzuela reported gains in ELA and science overall but identified math as “a significant area of concern” to be addressed through evidence‑based math strategies and supports for English learners and students with disabilities.
Gus Franklin STEM Academy Principal Nicole Peterson reviewed site outcomes and noted the school’s enrollment of 493 students and subgroup results across ELA and math. Peterson said the school advanced through a Blue Ribbon recognition process; Superintendent Dr. Walker later told the board the district received a letter from the state superintendent of public instruction recognizing Gus Franklin as a 2025 Blue Ribbon School.
