Glendora honors longtime recreation director John Aguirre at final commission meeting

The Glendora Community Services Commission honored outgoing Recreation and Human Services Director John Aguirre at its meeting, marking 36 years of city service and previewing retirement celebrations.
“As you all know, John, you are retiring at the end of next month. I believe it's 36 years of service for the city of Glendora,” Chair Gerber said during the presentation honoring Aguirre’s career and contributions to parks, recreation and community initiatives.
Recreation manager Annie Warner presented the Shining Star award to Mike Diaz, describing his progression from maintenance aide in 2022 to his current role as a recreation specialist at Louis Pompey Sports Park; Diaz was not present and will receive the meeting link and recognition materials. Commissioners and community members offered tributes and memories, stressing Aguirre’s staff leadership, community legacy and continued local involvement after retirement.
Aguirre outlined department highlights, including the recent completion of the teen center playground, pending projects (La Fetra Center improvements, Legion Building restroom remodel delayed to Jan. 2027, Big Dalton restroom rebuild), the parks and trails master plan schedule and plans for skate‑park resurfacing. Aguirre said staff will continue to run programs and that the department will remain active in community events even after he steps down. The commission and Community Services Foundation will host additional events to celebrate his career; Aguirre’s retirement party is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 2:00 p.m. at the Legion Building.
Commissioners congratulated Aguirre and welcomed Annie Warner as the incoming interim director, wishing both well for the transition and thanking staff and volunteers who support city programming.
