Rhonda Lower of Marathon Township told the commission it previously approved replacing a long-serving trustee (Perry Valley) with Oregon Township trustee Chris Van Bell, and questioned Van Bell's qualifications for the library board. Lower said Perry Valley brought extensive institutional experience and argued trustees have a fiduciary duty to act for the entire community. "The LDL belongs to the entire community," she said, urging the commission to remind appointees to uphold their oaths.
Leslie Gax and others echoed concerns about the appointee's publicly stated religious framing of qualifications. Karen Bacheco and Susan Huffman Amora defended their handling of meeting video edits, arguing they had to comply with YouTube community guidelines and that leaving graphic footage in uploaded clips could jeopardize the county's ability to publish meeting recordings. Bacheco described choices she made as an editor to avoid platform removal and defended the integrity of her uploads.
Speakers also read a letter from Tom Coleman alleging police were called at a library meeting and making strong rhetorical comparisons; public commenters challenged those claims and requested evidence. Susan Huffman Amora urged the board to require proof for serious accusations and noted that uncut versions of some meetings are available on her group's YouTube channel and website.
The board did not take action on the library appointment during the meeting; public commenters requested the commission consider qualifications and fiduciary obligations ahead of oath-taking scheduled for Dec. 18.
