A Kingsbury development representative told the Trenton City Council on Dec. 16 that construction crews have completed roughly half of the apartment renovations at the West Tower and expect final units to be ready between Christmas and New Year’s, with residents moving back in early January.
The presenter emphasized interior upgrades including new per-room electric HVAC units that allow residents to control temperature independently, fresh filtered air delivery, stainless-steel appliances, new flooring and finishes. The speaker said demolition of the low-rise building is complete and exterior work will continue through the construction period.
Council members repeatedly praised the work and said the changes address long-standing safety and habitability concerns. “This is what the residents of the city of Trenton deserve,” Councilwoman Frisbie said, noting improved ventilation, replacement of mold-prone systems and added cameras in hallways and stairwells. Council members asked for additional tours for colleagues who had not yet visited the property.
Staff noted the redevelopment team engaged resident leadership and property managers early in the process and staged apartments so residents could return as units come online. Council and administration also confirmed fire- and safety-related work has been coordinated with the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) to bring systems up to code.
The presentation closed with a request that the developer return to brief council in a few months on remaining exterior work and the redevelopment plan for the former low-rise staging area, which the presenter said will be part of a later approval process.
The council did not take formal action on Kingsbury at the meeting; council members directed staff to schedule additional site tours and follow-up briefings.
