Council approves $3,000 scholarship grant and $2,000 parade reimbursement; $500 vets sponsorship dies

The City Council approved two discretionary‑fund requests and declined another during its Dec. 17 meeting.
Scholarship: The council approved $3,000 to the Roseville Joint Union High School District (item 37) to fund three $1,000 awards for the class of 2026. Janelle Lott, the district’s marketing and communications coordinator, said eligible students must have completed CTE pathway courses or worked as a city intern or employee and meet a 3.0 GPA minimum. Council members noted the program’s roughly 50‑year history and voted to provide the funds.
Parade reimbursement: The council also approved $2,000 to the Downtown Roseville Partnership to offset costs for the 67th Sylvia Besana Holiday Parade (Dec. 6). Parade organizers reported approximately 3,000–4,000 attendees and 50 parade units; the DRP said the event keeps nonprofit entry fees low and covers insurance, staffing and park permits.
Allegiant Vets request: Representatives of Allegiant Vets described veterans training and transition programs and reported they netted about $6,000 from a Nov. 7 poker tournament. Council members expressed concern about post‑event funding requests and the use of city funds for a poker tournament; a motion to approve the $500 sponsorship failed for lack of a second and no funds were awarded.
The council recorded roll‑call votes for the approved items; the city clerk will process disbursements from council discretionary funds.
