The Easton School Committee voted Oct. 15 to approve four school-district policies on their second reading, and moved dozens of other policy edits into the first-reading track.
The committee approved IMGA (animal-assisted therapy), KJA (relations with booster organizations), LBC (relations with nonpublic schools) and LDA (student teaching and internships) during a remote policy workshop. Each motion was taken by roll call and recorded as passed.
Why it matters: Approving these policies finalizes district guidance on the limited, staff-supervised presence of animals for therapeutic or instructional support (IMGA), clarifies how booster organizations relate to the district (KJA), documents procedures for approving relationships with private schools (LBC) and aligns student-teaching and internship language with current practice (LDA). Several first readings and administrative edits were also scheduled for follow-up by a policy subcommittee.
What the committee did: Jackie presided and asked for motions. For IMGA, a motion to approve was made and seconded; roll-call votes were recorded with Hamilton, Percio, Loomis and Wiseman voting yes and the motion carried. Loomis moved and Hamilton seconded approval of KJA; the roll call again recorded Hamilton, Percio, Loomis and Wiseman as yes. Loomis moved and Percio seconded approval of LBC with the same roll-call result. For LDA, the committee recorded a motion and a roll-call vote; the transcript records yes votes (Hamilton; a member listed as 'First year' in the record; Lewis; and Wiseman) and the policy was approved.
Vote details (as recorded in meeting): - IMGA (animal-assisted therapy): motion to approve; mover: speaker who stated 'So moved' (recorded in the transcript); second: Loomis; roll call — Hamilton: yes; Percio: yes; Loomis: yes; Wiseman: yes. Outcome: approved. - KJA (relations with booster organizations): mover: Loomis; second: Hamilton; roll call — Hamilton: yes; Percio: yes; Loomis: yes; Wiseman: yes. Outcome: approved. - LBC (relations with nonpublic schools): mover: Loomis; second: Percio; roll call — Hamilton: yes; Percio: yes; Loomis: yes; Wiseman: yes. Outcome: approved. - LDA (student teaching and internships): mover: Loomis; second: recorded in transcript; roll call — Hamilton: yes; a transcript line reads 'First year, yes'; Lewis: yes; Wiseman: yes. Outcome: approved.
What’s next: Committee members and staff said they will finalize remaining edits and return several items for additional review at the next policy subcommittee meeting (scheduled Oct. 28) or at a future full meeting. The committee adjourned at the close of the workshop.
