Recording problems, budget-letter complaint and police building info session draw public attention

Members addressed a recurring recording problem and read a public letter about budget-committee conduct into the meeting record.

The board discussed prior meeting audio failures; staff identified a loose cord as the likely cause and agreed to pursue maintenance and designate a person to check the recorder before important meetings. The board suggested contacting an IT contractor (Josh Birtle) to establish a maintenance agreement and to ensure backups for televised meetings.

The board read aloud and entered into the record a letter from budget committee member Alina Bridal. The letter said a select-board member posted on social media suggesting an unnamed budget-committee member should apologize to the chair for purportedly unprofessional conduct; Bridal asked the Select Board to enter the letter into the official minutes and to clarify the town’s standards for "de minimis" financial thresholds when the committee and select board propose minor reductions. A resident who said they were the person described in the letter accepted the explanation offered during the meeting.

Separately, members and the building committee reported a well-attended information session about a proposed municipal/police building; the board discussed additional info sessions, price-per-square-foot breakdowns and the need to prepare bond-payment scenarios before the warrant deadline. Members said they expected at least one more public session and that the Select Board will need to decide warrant language and financing (bond length and payment estimates) after budgets and warrant-article deadlines close.

"I kindly request that this letter be entered into the official record," the author said when asking the board to include the text in the minutes. Budget committee chair Jim Hajar/Hazard briefed the board about tax-cap calculations and revenue-projection practices in relation to warrant planning.
