West Richland honors Mayor Brent Gary for 16 years of service

Council members on Dec. 16 adopted Resolution 54-25, a formal expression of appreciation for Mayor Brent Gary’s 16 years of service to West Richland, including four years on the council and 12 years as mayor.
Stephanie, the city clerk, read the resolution’s language listing major capital and infrastructure projects, long-term water and utility improvements, public-safety investments and initiatives to modernize compensation and workplace policies. The staff report said those efforts strengthened employee morale and supported the city’s ability to serve residents.
"During mayor Gary's tenure, the city experienced a period of significant growth and advancement," the staff report said. The resolution passed by voice vote.
Mayor Gary addressed the council and attendees, thanking council members and city staff. "It's the staff that are the real heroes," he said, and described his approach as a "family-first" work ethic that guided personnel policies during his tenure, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. He urged the incoming council and city leadership to make difficult budget choices to preserve services and closed by thanking colleagues and staff.
What’s next: The council swore in newly elected/reelected members later in the meeting and will convene under incoming leadership at the next regular meeting.
