Committee approves EMS clinical-ride agreement with Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Rutherford County’s Public Safety Committee voted Nov. 24 to approve a memorandum of agreement allowing Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s EMT students to ride clinically with county EMS crews.
Director Gaither presented the MOA and described it as consistent with existing agreements the county has with regional training programs (MTSU, Columbia State and others). He told commissioners the agreement has circulated between the county’s and Vanderbilt’s legal teams for the past six months and that the schools require students to maintain malpractice/insurance coverage while participating.
A commissioner asked about the county’s liability exposure; Gaither replied the county’s exposure is minimal because student liability is handled by the schools and similar arrangements exist with other local programs. Commissioners discussed preceptor time commitments (county paramedic preceptors often supervise students extensively) and noted that preceptors do not receive additional compensation for mentoring students.
The committee approved the MOA by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
What’s next: the county will execute the agreement so Vanderbilt EMT students can begin scheduled clinical rides with Rutherford County EMS.
