Board honors custodial staff across district with annual housekeeping awards

The Topeka Public Schools Board of Education used its meeting to honor custodial staff districtwide with its annual housekeeping awards, highlighting the daily contributions of building operators and custodial teams.
Director Schaeffer and Custodial Operations Supervisor Jeff Dickinson described their twice-yearly review and scoring process and introduced recipients: Topeka High (head building operator Linda Palmore’s team; Robert Lonin accepted), Chase Middle School (Dr. Hannah Taylor and staff; Jason Hill), Scott Elementary (principal Lisa Martinez and head operator Taylor Zuercher), and Capital City High (principal Randy Wilde and building operator Eric LeBlanc).
Winners and principals described custodians’ roles in maintaining clean, safe environments. "They come in every day, put their head down, and really do the dirtiest of work," Schaeffer said, thanking staff for their reliability and care. Awardees accepted brief remarks and board members shared personal thanks and anecdotes about the influence custodians have on students.
The board paused to take photographs and noted the awards recognize often-unheralded staff whose work supports teaching and learning across the district.
