Principals and site council representatives from Manhattan High School, Anthony Middle School and Eisenhower Middle School presented progress reports to the Manhattan‑Ogden USD 383 board on Nov. 19, emphasizing instructional changes, student engagement strategies and ongoing staffing needs.
Manhattan High School: Michael Doris, identified in the packet as principal of Manhattan High School, said the school is piloting a split‑core ELA model that places a special‑education teacher in an English class as a co‑teacher and that the Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) program has shown early success. He reported last year’s graduation rate at 88.9 percent, flagged a recent uptick in altercations and substance‑related incidents among a small group of students, and told the board, "We do currently need 19 paraprofessionals." He also praised the district’s ParentSquare communication tool and described new on‑site CNA classes in partnership with MATC.
Anthony Middle School: A presenter named Vicky reported that AMS serves roughly 700 students and represents 27 languages; the school has implemented a house system tied to MTSS recognition that has produced thousands of positive staff recognitions this quarter, and administrators are using student‑support monitors (funded with at‑risk dollars) and after‑school homework assistance to address attendance and engagement barriers. AMS has a parent engagement night planned for Dec. 2 and emphasized relationships and inclusion in its work with emerging bilinguals.
Eisenhower Middle School: The Eisenhower principal described a sustained culture‑change effort using CHAMPS and Safe & Civil Schools practices, noting reduced discipline through consistent school‑wide expectations. The school has added two full‑time social workers and plans a third counselor after winter break to provide additional student supports; the principal said restorative justice practices and WATCH D.O.G.S. family engagement have been valuable.
Board members praised the innovations and asked clarifying questions about assessment score changes and how to share positive stories with the community. Administrators said they will continue to track data and return with updates.
