Human resources reports hiring gains, substitute shortages and alternative licensure pathways

Becky Maynard, assistant superintendent for human resources, briefed trustees on hiring and staffing trends at the Oct. 13 meeting. Maynard said the district hired roughly 71 certified staff and 97 classified staff this hiring season, including 15 who transitioned from para or substitute roles into certified positions.
Maynard described alternative licensing pathways (TAP and MAT programs) that allow paraprofessionals and candidates with related bachelor’s degrees to obtain restricted licenses and then continue toward full licensure. She said roughly 10 new hires were working toward alternative licensing and that some will achieve restricted licenses in January.
On substitutes, Maynard said the district has quality substitutes but continues to face coverage challenges for classified roles. She summarized expanded emergency substitute license requirements and limits (high‑school diploma plus online modules; limit of 25 days in the same assignment and no more than 75 days per semester) and said the district is preparing outreach materials to recruit more substitutes.
Maynard also reported processing 440 new non‑resident applications and 164 in‑district transfer requests; she said staff will deliver a detailed grade/building report to trustees soon.
