Derby Rotary, community fundraisers yield $51,586 for student meals

Derby Rotary and community partners presented a $51,586 donation to Derby Public Schools on Oct. 13, a contribution organizers said will support school meal programs and other student needs.
Heather Bohaty, superintendent of Derby Public Schools and this year’s Derby Rotary president, described a multi‑pronged fundraising effort that included the Hot Wheels for Hot Meals car show and a citywide garage sale coordinated by Rotary. Bohaty credited club members, school staff, students and business sponsors for the total and asked board members to pause the meeting so volunteers and organizers could join for a group photograph.
Dana Quigley and other Rotary members who helped coordinate the events were present for the check presentation. Pam Kelly, the district’s director of finance, came forward with the check. Bohaty said the garage‑sale program screened and cleaned donations; unsold items were donated to local nonprofits and to school families during conferences.
The board recessed briefly to gather for photos. No board action was required other than accepting the presentation; attendees applauded the community effort.
The donation follows several years of Rotary partnership with the district, organizers said, and Rotary notified the board the next garage‑sale fundraiser is already scheduled for June (dates announced in board materials).
