During its Dec. 8 meeting, the USD 443 Board of Education approved two personnel-related action items developed and recommended by the Professional Development Council and taken to the board for action.
Dr. Springston presented changes to the teacher support pathways intended to separate initial-license pathways from specialist-license pathways (for counselors and librarians), to clarify August orientation attendance for specialists, to refine green-pathway placement criteria and to change credit value for the impact cycle from 2 to 4 based on substantiated work. After a motion and second, the board approved the changes.
The board also approved the district-wide professional development (PD) plan. Dr. Springston explained the PD point system (one hour equals one point) and the PDC recommendation that all point requests be submitted within a five-year window to align with Kansas professional licensure cycles. Board members asked about PD subject matter, including classroom management and social-emotional learning; Springston said the district provides both content and pedagogy-focused PD and that social-emotional/behavior work is supported by the CARES and MHIT teams.
Other routine business on the consent agenda — personnel approvals, minutes and donations to Sunnyside Elementary, Dodge City High School and Bridal Beginnings — was approved earlier in the meeting. The board also approved two procurement-related motions introduced by Business Services: to use DCS Services as construction manager on three roof projects and to go out to bid for maintenance equipment; both motions passed after board votes.
