Sloan board approves course and textbook, instructs KASB delegate, declines property offer and approves personnel actions

The board unanimously approved moving and adopting a new fourth‑year Agriculture Leadership and Communications course intended to allow senior‑year FFA participation and leadership development. Laura Lyons presented the proposal, noting it would expand pathway options for students who begin ag courses in ninth grade.
The board also approved adoption of a middle‑school math textbook that district staff piloted and said aligns with the district’s I‑Ready diagnostic and personalized learning tools. Presenters told the board the resource scored highly on national review platforms and is intended to strengthen procedural fluency alongside conceptual understanding.
On governance and external affairs, the board instructed the district’s KASB delegate, Dan Acaso, to cast supportive votes for the Kansas Association of School Boards’ legislative priorities, constitutional amendments and the president‑elect candidate Judy Price at the upcoming KASB assembly. The board discussed priorities such as school funding, special education funding and voucher issues during the KASB agenda item.
Following an attorney‑client executive session, the board voted 7‑0 to decline an offer to purchase district property on Magnolia Road submitted by David Olson for $350,000.
During personnel sessions the board approved resolution 625 terminating the contract of employment with Amanda Freeman for the 2025–26 school year (motion carried 7‑0). The board also approved extended health leave for Janelle Feller through Jan. 4, 2026, with a condition that she return when cleared by her physician (motion carried 7‑0).
Superintendent Mr. Hogan summarized several district developments earlier in the meeting and praised the district’s staffing partnership: “I’ve been very impressed with the Kelly organization,” he said, citing a roughly 31% increase in the district’s fill rate since the partnership began.
All motions recorded at the meeting passed on recorded voice votes of seven in favor and zero opposed. The board adjourned and said it will meet again in December.
