Piper board adopts Option 2 for K–5 transition attendance boundaries

The Piper Unified School District Board voted Dec. 8 to adopt Option 2 as the district's kindergarten-through-fifth-grade transition attendance boundary plan following a 15-month review and community engagement process.

Administration said the process began with board direction, included community outreach and three committee meetings in October and November, and relied on data and modeling from consultants (RSP and IDS) to evaluate enrollment and boundaries. Staff reported a 70% approval rate on the community survey and emphasized using equity-focused, data-driven analysis to inform the recommendation.

"We have brought in RSP and then also IDS and their software and looked at enrollment, looked at what boundaries would look like," administration said, and recommended the committee's Option 2 based on those findings. A motion to approve Option 2 was made, seconded and approved by the board in a recorded voice vote that the transcript shows as unanimous.

Board members previously had multiple detailed work sessions with the consultants and asked staff for additional data during that review process; administration said the recommendation reflects that iterative work. The approved option will guide kindergarten-through-fifth-grade attendance boundaries for the next transition period and staff said they will communicate specifics to affected families and principals as implementation proceeds.
