The Piper Unified School District Board of Education approved the 2026–27 academic calendar after a second read, moving the start date to Aug. 13 and adding color-coded late-start Fridays to help families plan, pending final negotiations noted in the motion.
The Piper Unified School District Board of Education approved the district's 2026'27 academic calendar on Dec. 8, 2025, after a second reading and brief discussion.
District administrator Jenny Hurley told the board the draft calendar largely mirrors the format used the last two years but shifts the start date back one week ' to Aug. 13 ' "in alignment with what we have been doing, previous to the new buildings opening." She also said the calendar includes color-coded late-start Fridays to make scheduling easier for families.
The district's calendar committee, composed of district administrators and members of the Piper Teachers Association, reviewed responses to writing prompts and community feedback; Hurley said the draft reflects that joint work. A board member noted appreciation that the calendar was released early so staff and families could plan.
A motion to approve the calendar as presented, "pending final negotiations," was made and seconded and the board recorded the motion as passing on voice votes.
The approval is a second-read adoption at the board level; final technical adjustments tied to ongoing negotiations were noted in the motion. The calendar will now be posted for families and staff with the district's standard communications channels and will include the late-start Friday color coding referenced by staff.
The board moved on to other agenda items after the vote.
