Union County Tax Administration urged owners of boats, mobile homes, campers and untagged vehicles to file personal property tax listings in January, warned of penalties for late or unsigned filings, and described a Good Cause extension option through March 15.
Union County Tax Administration advised, "Help ensure your annual tax bill is accurate by updating your personal property listing for certain types of personal items." The office said owners of boats, mobile homes, campers and untagged vehicles must file an individual personal property tax listing during January.
The filing affects the value used to calculate residents' property tax bills each August. The office said residents can download an online form or pick up a paper listing at the tax administration office and that its staff is available to help with the state-required process.
When completing the form, filers should include their name, mailing address and personal information and note changes such as a move or the sale of listed property. The county emphasized that registered vehicles and ordinary household items (furniture, electronics, clothing) do not need to be listed, and that items obtained after Jan. 1 are reported the following year. Property owners who made real-estate improvements such as adding a deck or garage should list those changes; routine maintenance such as painting does not need to be reported.
All mail to the tax administration office must be postmarked on or before Jan. 31 to meet the deadline. The county warned that missing the deadline or failing to report improvements may result in a penalty and reminded filers to sign forms to avoid return. Residents who need more time may request a Good Cause extension by Jan. 31; the office said such requests may be granted through March 15.
The county also noted tax deferment programs are available to qualifying residents and advised anyone with questions to contact the tax administration office at (704) 283-3746 or visit the taxes and property webpage at unioncountync.gov/taxadmin.
