Commission recommends Eichler neighborhood objective design standards to City Council

Pick said the standards are intended to preserve the architectural character of midcentury Eichler homes while allowing compatible updates and that the process included outreach beginning in 2020.
Public commenters from neighborhood preservation groups and residents voiced support for clear standards that balance preservation with the city's housing needs. Sally Sarnovitz, speaking for the Glen Editions preservation committee, praised the simplified review process and staff outreach. The Commission discussed concerns about potential unintended delays for routine repairs in other historic districts and confirmed that the standards would apply only to properties listed in the city’s historic inventory.
Commissioner Oliverio moved to recommend adoption of the standards; the motion carried on a 9-0 roll call. The matter will be forwarded to the City Council on December 2 for consideration.
